SHORT TERM FOSTER CARERS NEEDED FOR HOLIDAY COVER

22 DECEMBER 2012

PAWS urgently need short term foster carers to look after dogs temporarily while their own foster carers go away during the school holiday period. This may suit people who don't want to commit to long term foster care until a dog finds a new home or who are going to be staying home over the Christmas/New Year period and would like a doggy companion! Please email denise@paws.com.au for more information if you think you might be able to help us out.

SAD NEWS ABOUT RESCUED DOG BOBBY THE SHIH TZU
13 DECEMBER 2012

Bobby the 10 year old Shih Tzu came to PAWS one month ago from Renbury Farm Pound. Before Bobby was impounded he was held by a family for three months and they noticed his eyes were sore so took him to their local vet who scanned Bobby and found that he had a microchip with contact details attached. Bobby was impounded in the hope that his owner would come forward and Bobby stayed at Renbury Farm for two weeks but sadly his owner did not come for him so he was released to PAWS. Bobby was taken straight to the vet for examination and he discovered that Bobby had a lot more than sore eyes. His ears and eyes were grossly infected and his teeth were also very bad but, in addition, the lymph nodes in Bobby's neck and groin were huge. The vet was not happy with all of the infections that Bobby had and was very suspicious that the swollen lymph nodes meant something more sinister was going on with him. We are the eternal optimists and hoped that the swelling was caused from his teeth, eye and ear infections so Bobby was put on a strong course of antibiotics for three weeks. Bobby went back to the vet at the end of the antibiotic course for a check up but sadly his lymph nodes had not come down at all. A biopsy was done and a sample sent off for pathology testing and the result was that our worst fears were realised and Bobby has lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system). We are keeping Bobby as comfortable as possible so he had a dental while under anaesthetic for the biopsy, his ear and eye infections have cleared up and he is feeling somewhat better than he was when he arrived from the Pound. Bobby is a really nice little dog that goes for walks, plays with his toys and generally enjoys life now. Bobby's foster carers love him very much and have offered to keep Bobby with them until his time comes. Bobby is going to Perth with his 'foster family' for Christmas and we know that he will have a wonderful time. PAWS have agreed to pay all ongoing medical costs for Bobby and will do everything necessary to keep him happy, healthy and comfortable for as long as possible.

BLACKTOWN POUND DESEXING POLICY UNDER REVIEW
22 APRIL 2012

Blacktown Councillors will soon be voting to review the desexing policy for all animals sold by the Pound. Please click here to read an article in the Blacktown Sun with more information and we urge you to add your comments supporting mandatory desexing. Backyard Breeders often obtain their 'breeding stock' from Pounds and a voluntary desexing policy will only serve to increase the numbers of dogs and cats that end up in the Pound and also contribute to the ongoing misery of animals kept in cages to breed puppies and kittens for sale in pet shops, markets, newspapers and online.

UPDATE 3 MAY:  Last night Blacktown Council voted unanimously to impose mandatory desexing on all dogs and cats sold from the Pound and thanks to everyone who worked tirelessly to have this policy implemented!

FAREWELL LITTLE DOTTIE
9 NOVEMBER 2011

Dottie's mum Vanessa sent us this sad farewell to her ex- PAWS rescued dog adopted early October and who passed away this week after a short illness.

"My dear little Dottie, I'm struggling to understand they way things worked out. You were such a sweet little dog yet life handed you some tough blows. Despite this, you were always so gentle and loving, your eyes were these little pools of trust and tranquillity. I'm so going to miss taking you for walks and smiling constantly at your cute little ways, like the way you used to half squat and raise your paw when you peed... just too cute. Waking up early to take you for walks before work was the most amazing incentive to get up; I couldn't wait to see your happy little face in the morning, all sleepy and with your fluffy little face looking up at me making me feel like I was the luckiest person in the world. In the little time that I knew you, you well and truly stole my heart and that same heart now is broken knowing I'll never get to cuddle up with you again. I only hope that your last months in life were as happy for you as they were for us, your loving adoptive family who will miss you more than you will ever know.

Rest in peace my little friend. I can't imagine anywhere else you would be except up in heaven as the little angel you have always been. We love you Dottie."

Many tears will be shed on reading this story and our hearts go out to Vanessa on her sad loss ...
